Recently, regional trains jointly developed by Ningbo Rail Transit and CRRC for Lines 10 and 12 made their debut at the CRRC Ningbo Industrial Base, marking a new stage of commissioning for Ningbo’s urban rail transit system.
The lines represent China’s first demonstration project for the standard regional Type A trains, which allow for a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h, significantly higher than 80-100 km/h of the existing lines. Once in operation, the trains—designed to be lighter and faster—will help integrate the northern and southern parts of Ningbo with the urban core, forming a 60-minute commuting circle across the city.
In line with China’s dual carbon goals, the trains reduce overall energy consumption by approximately 15% compared to the conventional regional trains. Through structural optimization and material upgrades, the trains are 4.28 tons lighter, or 2.4% less than conventional models. Their streamlined design helps reduce the aerodynamic drag by 5%. Advanced permanent magnet synchronous traction technology lowers traction energy consumption by about 14%.
