The China Association of Urban Rail Transit recently announced the results of the 2024 Urban Rail Transit Science and Technology Progress Awards. The project titled "Series-Based Chinese Standard Subway Trains," with CRRC Yongji Electric's deep involvement, was awarded the Grand Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress.
Launched in 2019, the project assigned CRRC Yongji Electric a key role in the independent development and technical upgrade of subway train traction systems. The company worked to unify and standardize the technical specifications, functionalities, mechanical and electrical interfaces across trains of different models and speeds. The result: increased train reliability and cost-efficiency, shorter design and manufacturing cycles, and reduced maintenance costs for operators.
Focusing on goals of "green efficiency, compact lightweight design, and intelligent reliability," Yongji applied a range of new technologies, processes, and materials to independently develop a series of permanent magnet traction systems for standard subway trains. The project achieved 100% localized core control systems for use in urban rail transit.
The system adopts a modular, platform-based design adaptable for subway speeds ranging from 80 to 120 km/h. Subway trains equipped with these permanent magnet systems saw a 5% increase in overall efficiency and up to 30% in energy savings. The motors themselves feature simplified, modular, and scalable designs—delivering high efficiency, low noise, and reduced weight. The traction control unit, often referred to as the "nerve center" of the traction system, utilizes advanced digital and vector control technologies to enable safe and precise traction, braking, and monitoring, offering high performance, strong reliability, broad adaptability, and excellent electromagnetic compatibility.
The successful implementation of the Chinese standard subway train project marks a major milestone for the development of a "transportation power" and smart urban rail systems in China. It is not only a strategic move in line with national transportation goals but also a timely response to the growing demands of urban rail operators.
CRRC Yongji Electric continues to align with the urban rail industry's development blueprint, remaining committed to technological self-reliance and innovation. Its efforts are injecting strong momentum into the transformation and upgrading of China's urban rail transit sector.
