Recently, CRRC Dalian Co., Ltd. achieved a significant milestone as its independently developed medium-speed, high-power ammonia-fueled engine became the first of its kind in China to receive a Type Approval Certificate from the China Classification Society (CCS). The certification ceremony was attended by Zhan Yuzhou, Deputy General Manager of CRRC Group’s Industrial Development Division, and Zhang Jian, Deputy Party Secretary and Deputy General Manager of CRRC Dalian Co., Ltd.
Held at the 16th China Dalian International Maritime Exhibition, the ceremony saw Liu Tiebo, Deputy General Manager of CCS Dalian Branch, present the certification to CRRC Dalian Diesel Engine Co., Ltd., marking a key breakthrough in China's pursuit of clean marine fuel technologies.
The development of this first-of-its-kind ammonia-fueled engine began in 2021 under China’s Marine Clean Fuel Technology Innovation Consortium. The construction design was completed in December 2022, with the prototype successfully igniting in November 2023. In October 2024, the first production unit received CCS Type Approval, certifying its readiness for commercial application.
The certification represents a major achievement for CRRC Dalian, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian), and consortium partners, including top universities and research institutions. This milestone underscores efforts to enhance digital, intelligent, and green technologies, foster new productive forces, and drive innovation and value creation in the marine industry.
The ammonia-fueled engine will be deployed as the main engine on China’s first ammonia-powered port operations vessel, serving as an industry benchmark for clean energy solutions in maritime applications. By paving the way for low-carbon, sustainable shipping, the innovation is set to accelerate industry-wide upgrades, boost value creation, and strengthen China’s leadership in next-generation new energy equipment manufacturing.
Through strategic partnerships, CRRC Dalian and COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) remain committed to resource sharing, technological collaboration, and industrial transformation in the clean energy sector. By integrating innovation, industry, finance, and talent, they continue to advance high-end, intelligent, and sustainable marine technologies, driving the next wave of industrial development.
The certification ceremony was attended by representatives from COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian), CCS Dalian Branch, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and other key industry stakeholders.
