On November 3, the Songjiang Tram System partnered with Children’s Daily’s Young Reporters Group to host an immersive educational event, offering young participants a closer look at modern tram technology. During the visit to the tram depot, the budding reporters explored the intricacies of the “Silkworm Baby” tram and experienced firsthand the fusion of contemporary transportation and digital technology.
Guided by staff members, the young reporters gained insights into the fundamental features of trams, operational models, structural design, and power transmission principles. They also had the rare opportunity to closely examine the bogie system and driver’s control panel, uncovering the advanced engineering behind tram operations. The engaging and accessible explanations provided by the staff helped demystify the technological marvels of urban rail transit.
At the Operation Control Center (OCC)—the “super brain” and “guiding beacon” of urban rail systems—the young visitors learned about tram dispatching and control mechanisms, including power supply systems, traffic management, and surveillance operations. Witnessing the highly coordinated, precise, and orderly environment of the OCC left a lasting impression, giving the students a deeper understanding of the critical role this nerve center plays in ensuring safe and efficient tram operations.
Toward the end, the Songjiang Tram team organized a lively Q&A session, where the young reporters eagerly engaged in discussions, posing thoughtful questions and exchanging ideas with tram staff. The enthusiastic participation brought the event to an exciting peak, as the children competed to showcase their newly acquired knowledge.
