On August 16, CCTV Morning News focused on the high-power hydrogen fuel cell locomotive jointly developed by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive CO., Ltd. and CHN ENERGY, demonstrating the application of hydrogen energy in heavy-haul railways.
This locomotive is the first 2400 kW high-power hydrogen fuel cell locomotive manufactured in China. It provides multiple power supply modes, such as hydrogen fuel power supply, lithium battery power supply and hybrid power supply for different traction demands. It is designed to significantly reduce air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.
According to Song Wei, a locomotive driver, the locomotive powered by hydrogen energy is energy-saving and environment-friendly. Its high power enables it run at speed of 100 km/h and haul a maximum load of nearly 10,000 tons, which is equivalent to pulling over 200 coupled vehicles with length of about 6 kilometers. In addition, the locomotive fully loaded with hydrogen is able to run continuously for more than 12 hours with endurance mileage of 800 kilometers. The durability, high and low temperature, vibration tests of the power system and key components of it have been completed now. After it is put into operation in the near future, the annual fuel consumption of a locomotive of this type will reduce by 164 tons, and its yearly carbon dioxide emission will decrease by 508 tons.
